Trump and College Speech

Trump Signs executive order on college speech.

For people who are dedicated to protecting free speech, this is probably great news. Personally, I am actually comfortable with this decision.

Free speech is something that matters to me, and it is one of the fundamental components of American government. I tend to get uncomfortable when people try to limit speech, because that can lead to opinions being lost and viewpoints being ignored. In a democracy, differing opinions help to ensure that everyone gets a voice, and not just one getting benefits.

College is an area in which young people are often first exposed to new viewpoints and greater opportunities to speak out. Limiting their ability to do so would be detrimental to their ability to speak out later in life. So, as I said before, I support this order.

I will admit though, I find it ironic that Trump is the one signing the order. Considering his history with the press and news outlets, I never expected him to give people more freedom of speech. I think maybe e expects the order will make young people more open to him. Probably won't work though.

Fake News Law

Fake News Law The law that was adopted in Singapore would likely never be able to pass in the U.S. There are quite a few reasons why.  The most obvious reason being that Americans love their Free Speech. The First Amendment gives people the right to say what they want, and some people love talking. To make a change this drastic would only serve to gain the ire of the people.  Now, that doesn't mean it's impossible to have something be done about fake news. I just think that that responsibility would have to fall into the hands of the tech companies. The government can't really do anything without making it look like free speech infringement. So companies can try to find ways to prevent fake news from entering their sites. Google has algorithms meant to modify their site for their users. May be they can make algorithms that detect and remove inaccurate news. Facebook or Bing could try doing the same.  Fake news is a serious issue. One in need of a serious ...

Lord Google

It is clear without a doubt that Google is the primary search engine in America. The default term in America for searching something up online is 'googling' something. Very few people 'bing' things. Even fewer people (myself included) know about any other search engines aside from these two. I have only recently become aware of sites such as DuckDuckGo, Wiki.com, or CC Search. Because of Google's popularity and tight grip online, some people might call it a monopoly. That might be a positive or negative thing.  On the negative side, the amount of power Google has will certainly make it harder for smaller businesses to be able to become successful online. Many possible search engines may just become one of many sites to never turn a profit, even after years. Although for some, that may not be an issue. Google has become successful because of how easy it is to use. And it has made the gathering of information so much easier than it has ever been. To...

Will Print Go Out Of Style?

Will Print Go Out Of Style? I'm pretty sure everyone has heard this discussion before. The internet is taking over everything. Even newspapers, one of the most well known forms of print media, is moving online. Soon, we won't have any use for paper.  But is that true? Personally, I don't think so. While digital media is becoming far more common and widespread, it is unlikely for print to just up and vanish. For one thing, print media is easier to read than digital. I know for a fact that reading on a screen for too long can cause both sore eyes and headaches. Not a fun experience. Not only that, but some people just prefer print. They prefer to have a book or a paper in their hands to read. The same thing has happened with vinyl records. While it is true that digital downloads and streaming are more popular by a large margin, there is still a market for people who like vinyl records.  And just like vinyl, I believe that print will persist. People st...
